Hamvention is only 4 months away

The largest hamfest is only about 4 months away. It will be held on May 16, 17 & 18 at the Greene County Fairgrounds and Expo Center. Will you be going? I am planning on attending. I have been many times and I enjoy the Xenia location much more than the old Dayton location at Hera Arena.

You can find out more about the Hamvention at https://hamvention.org/.

Spring Valley Nature Center

Spring Valley is a popular nature area that is a pleasant place to walk and observe nature.

This photo was taken a couple of days ago on a walk at Merkle Lake. In the summer this lake is a host to numerous ducks, geese, muskrats, egrets, and others. It’s such a nice place to visit!

Yaesu FT3D HT

The Yaesu FT3D has been primary handi-talkie (HT) for the past few years. It is a complete System Fusion II and WiRES-X compatible HT and features two independent receivers for true simultaneous receive, a full-color TFT touch panel display, and a built-in GPS receiver, all in a super-compact body that weighs less than 10 ounces (282g) with a battery pack and antenna.

The HT is shown with the green signal stuff signal stick dual band flexible antenna.

1st SSD Failure

I recently had my first Solid State Drive (SSD) failure. Even though this drive is over ten years old I was surprised by it. Maybe I should not have been surprised but with mechanical drives most of their failures are mechanical, and you can hear them beginning to have trouble before they die. With this SSD drive, it went from working to dead in a split second. Fortunately, this laptop drive was backed up.

With a mechanical drive that has failed I usually take it apart to reclaim the magnets and to destroy the platters to be sure residual data cannot be recovered. This SSD disk is a new challenge!

If you are interested in DMR I recommended you try the AnyTone HTs. They are high quality, solidly built, fit well into your hand, have excellent battery life, and are reasonably priced.

FTDX101MP

My main radio in my hamshack is the Yaesu FTDX101MP! This is my 3rd base radio in my hamshack. This radio replaced my previous ICOM 7300. This radio is a beast! I am working to learn about all of its capabilities, but it is so fun to operate!

Xiegu G90 & Portable Operating

The Xiegu G90 is a great radio for portable operations.

On the left you can see how simple the setup can be. The G90 is plugged into a 7AH battery that will provide hours of operation on a charge and paired with a telescoping multi-band antenna. The G90 is supported by a folding 3D printed stand. Also in the photo is my Yaesu FT3DR VHF/UHF transceiver. On the right an alternate setup with the G90 in a go box including the battery and using a Mini-Buddipole antenna.

This is a fun little radio!

My 1st Boat Anchor

I purchased my 1st boat anchor at a local hamfest about 3 years ago.

The SX-100 is a great radio. I did replace one weak tube but other than that it works and sounds great! The following video show the SX-100 in action!
