About

Welcome to my personal blog on Amateur Radio! My name is Bill…

The panoramic photo above was taken at the Mauna Kea Observatories on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, United States at approximately 13,800 feet above sea level! It was an awesome experience to visit and observe the sun set from this location. (coordinates)

I will attempt to post somewhat regularly about my experiences with Amateur Radio or life in general. Anything I post is based upon my experience and solely my opinion. I am located in Schaumburg, Illinois which is the northeast part of Illinois, about 30 miles west of Chicago. I was originally licensed as a Technician in 2000 as KB9YLD but quickly changed my call to K9WKD. I upgraded my license in 2015 to Extra. Look me up on QRZ!

My primary transceiver is a Yaesu FTDX101MP, utilizing a Hustler 4BTV and end fed zep antennas. I have a Yaesu FTM-500D in the shack for UHF/VHF communications. I have a number of HTs but my favorites are the Yaesu FT1XDR, Yaesu FT3D, and the Anytone D878.

I enjoy contesting, special events (13 Colonies for example), providing communications support for local events (marathons, triathlons, walks, etc.) I have even provided communications support for the Chicago Marathon the last few years! I am also a Volunteer Examiner (W5YI & ARRL) with a local radio club.

I do not allow comments on any blog postings. It is just too much effort to police comments. If you do have comments or questions please email me directly at admin@k9wkd.net. I would appreciate any constructive feedback and I would be glad to answer any questions on any of my postings.

I hope to meet you on the air!
